Match Report by Tony Middleton
CHESHAM UTD 1 HORNCHURCH 2

Chesham is a nice easy trip around the M25 – but only as far as Enfield, where traffic ground to a crawling halt, and it stayed this way for the next twenty miles. Ninety minutes later, with less than thirty minutes to kick off, we were just past the M1 turn. So leave the M25, up towards Aylesbury and then on to the A614 – we arrived just a few minutes before kick off. A four page programme was given away at the turnstiles and despite the rain, there was a reasonable size crowd in attendance.

The ground is right on the edge of the Chilterns, which accounts for the lush playing surface, with extra long grass. No drainage problems on the chalk surface, although they played 120 matches there last season and this had compacted the surface.

Adam Parker led the home team in a non stop display from midfield, and Urchins, defending against the backdrop of the Chilterns, quickly discovered that the home side were not treating this match as a friendly. Equally quickly they discovered that the referee had little or no intention of flashing his cards, otherwise at least three home players could have earned a yellow, or even a red, in the first ten minutes. Urchins went ahead from one of many free kicks, Lee Hodges touching the ball sideways to Simon Parker, back to Mark Goodfellow and forward again to Parker, with the resultant centre being neatly headed home by STEFAN BALL. A heron flew over the ground – was it ‘our’ heron?

Urchins could have increased their lead, when Mark Janney was put clear, but the ball bobbled and he mis-cued his shot wide of the post. Sam Collins came on to replace Lee Hodges and was almost immediately chopped down by Fotheringham, who was very fortunate to get away with a long lecture. It looked bad for Urchins when Dale Brightly raced out of his area to kick clear and went down with a leg injury, and remained down for several minutes whilst he was receiving attention, before being able to resume. Darrell Cox was next to receive a lengthy lecture from the referee, but despite the many stoppages only two minutes were added on. A good first half, with Urchins dominant, and good performances from all the team, with Styles and Goddard outstanding in defence.

Urchins took control for much of the second half, particularly so when Des Boateng and Dean Green came on. The second goal came when Dean Green took a pass inside his own half, made ground, took a return pass, continued on the right wing, and put over a high centre to the far post where ANDY TOMLINSON was waiting to hammer the ball home. Shortly afterwards Dale Brightly made the save of the match to keep out a spectacular shot from Leon Archer, and followed this up two minutes later with another good save, again from Archer. Once again the referee found he had a lot to do, and Urchins were content to keep the ball up the field inside the home half, with Green and Boateng a constant threat. Seven minutes to go, and Joel Reid eluded Goodfellow on the left wing, and sent over a good cross which LEON ARCHER hammered into the net. Brightly had to run quickly out of goal to block a run by Steve Obeng, and then Dale tipped over a long dipping cross from Lambert . Des Boateng could have made it three for Urchins, but Bobby Smith made an excellent save at his feet. A needless follow through in the final minute ended with John Purdie, who was nowhere near the incident, being booked, and the referee almost immediately ended proceedings, adding no time on at all.
