Wow. Basingstoke may well be the surprise package of this season so far but they were top of the league on merit, and we well and truly humbled them today.

The game began at a fast pace which belied the hot, stifling conditions, and the visitors came close after 11 minutes when Mark Westhead spilt a long-range shot from David Ray and Argentinian Sergio Torres slipped the loose ball across goal and just wide.  It wasn't too long though before the Basingstoke defence, and specifically keeper Scott Tarr, were being kept busy.  Tarr saved well from a close range header from Wayne Purser on 17 minutes and a minute later pushed over a looping header from Kirk Jackson. On the half hour Purser just beat Tarr to a long ball from midfield and managed to lob the ball over him but it drifted just wide.  We took the lead a minute later and it was scored by Jackson who fired an unstoppable header past Tarr from a Simon Wormull cross.  A couple of minutes after that Tarr again had to be on his toes as he tipped over another Jackson header and was probably a little fortunate as he struggled for a split second to control a header into the ground from that man Jackson on 38 minutes.

A lack of concentration in our defence 6 minutes into the second half allowed Torres to rob a defender but his well struck shot after a short run across the area was well handled by Westhead. But it was soon situation normal and Caskey chipped just wide on 53 minutes and a couple of minutes later Jackson was denied by a great block from Jason Bristow after Wormull pulled the ball back from the bye-line.  Shaun Carey was stretchered off in the 58th minute with a nasty looking knee injury and was replaced by Adie Harris but we went further ahead from the free-kick awarded for the foul on Carey when Caskey floated the ball in towards the penalty spot where Jackson glanced a header past the motionless Tarr.  Caskey himself got himself on the scoresheet on 68 minutes when he side-footed the ball into the top corner from the 12 yard mark after Jason Bristow was penalised for handball in the area.  Jean-Michel Sigere replaced Purser on 72 minutes and almost immediately he was celebrating after popping the ball home from a low Kirk Jackson cross - and he made it look so easy.

The next big cheer from the Hornchurch faithful came straight after when Steve West, sidelined through injury after 10 months, made his comeback, coming on in place of Jackson.  A goal would have made it a perfect return and he got it within ten minutes of coming on as he stretched to put the ball past Tarr from a Wormull cross which, despite getting good contact, the beleaugered keeper could do nothing keep out.  In a rare breakthrough at the other end Jamie Stuart had to head off the line from a Stuart Tanfield header but we completed the scoring with 3 minutes to go.  And it was Steve West who got it heading in off the crossbar from another pin-point Simon Wormull cross.
