Match Report by Tony Middleton
Snow, sleet, hail, prior to the start, and a strong north wind. No changes, and no programmes due to the printer developing a fault, though extra team sheets were available at the shop and in the bar. Urchins lost the toss and kicked towards the restaurant end of the ground, and got off to a good start when Janney crossed high into the area, with Gradioselski heading the ball away for a corner, which Janney took, only for the wind to carry the ball behind the goal. A Glozier free kick saw Assiamah slice the ball over his own bar, and Janney played the corner too short and Osei cleared up field, where Glozier returned the ball out to the left wing to Janney, his cross being sliced out again, this time by Gradioselski. Glozier took the corner and Thompson did well to punch the ball away from almost under the bar.
A low cross shot from Osei was all that Wingate could offer, Brightly saving comfortably, and at the other end Lee volleyed a shot high over the bar. A Purdie free kick saw Lee lob the keeper to put the ball into the net, but the whistle had already sounded, whilst a Fiddes run saw Thompson do well to save at his feet, and turn the ball out of play. Glozier took the corner and McFarlane headed back to Fiddes whose cross swirled behind the goal in the wind. A long range shot from Glozier was held by Thompson, whilst a long punt by Brightly saw Parker outpace Rifat and Simon hammered his shot inches over the bar. With the visitors struggling under heavy pressure, a Glozier free kick found McFarlane who headed back to Parker whose overhead kick went over the bar. Another free kick saw McFarlane’s header saved by Thompson and a Janney cross was headed over by Lee. Finally a goal came, and it followed a good build up on the right, resulting in a cross from Parker which KRIS LEE finished off. Lee almost found the net a minute later, Thompson making an excellent save, although the whistle then went for offside, and almost right on half time Parker turned and fed Janney with a good ground pass, and from his cross Amarteifio headed away from Kris Lee.
During the interval, the 50-50 prize of £60 was handed out, but the main talking point was whether Wingate would take advantage of the wind which had increased noticeably for the second half. It looked good for the Urchins when Southon won a header to send Parker away, and Simon found Cross whose shot swerved wide of the post, but Wingate took full advantage of the wind, and with very tight marking they began to control the midfield. Even so, the goal, when it came, was both a surprise and a defensive disaster, when Brightly failed to hold on to a run-of-the-mill shot cum cross from the right and DEAN WILLIAMS reacted quickly to score. Wingate continued to come forward, Ellis touching a short pass back to Gradioselski who hit his shot well wide. Urchins regained some composure when Glozier flighted a free kick out to Janney, who mistimed his cross and sent the ball over too high and out of play. Southon to Parker and then on to Janney, and a second goal seemed likely but good covering by Helman forced Janney wide and the chance was wasted when Thompson saved the hard on-target shot. Foyewa came on for Fiddes and almost managed to break through on the left, Assiamah doing well to get in a tackle. But it was Wingate who looked most likely to score, a long run from Clarke ending when his shot was turned out for a corner by Glozier. Osei took the kick and Brightly punched away. On the left it was a good wing run by Helman which saw him turn the ball out to Gradioselski, whose shot went across the face of the goal. Brightly then made amends for his earlier slip with an excellent diving save, whilst Parker then sent Janney away and Helman did well to tackle to prevent the shot.
With the wind sweeping downfield, Osei forced Fletcher to head out for a corner and from Osei’s corner, Brightly saved well from O’Brien, and then Purdie conceded a much disputed free kick which saw the ball quickly played to Osei whose shot was turned around by Brightly, for the first of two successive corners. The introduction of Ryan Lee steadied up the midfield, whilst Gasper came on up front, but found himself chasing long upfield balls into the wind. A Wingate corner was again cleared and in the final few minutes Wingate decided to hold on to their point, and their goal was not really threatened. A point won, or more likely two points lost, with Harlow losing, Canvey losing and Aveley losing.
