Match Report by Tony Middleton
The only change in the starting line up was Dave Collins coming in for Adam Parker, whilst Jake Whincup returned to Hornchurch as goalkeeper cover following last Tuesday’s scare. A fault on the printer meant that the programme run was considerably lower than normal, the result being a complete sell out some 15 minutes before the start. Urchins lost the toss and kicked into a strong sun, and they took some time to find any form of rhythm, and were almost caught out when Dean Parratt’s long free kick from the left almost dropped into the net, Brightly tipping the ball around the post for the first corner of the match. Urchins could have gone ahead when Tomlinson played a good pass through to Lee, whose low cross into the middle went begging across goal, and shortly afterwards Janney found Foyewa and he sent Lee away on the right. Lee screwed the ball back into the goalmouth where Henty hooked it away.
A Collins centre found Lee in the middle and he touched back to Foyewa, whose shot was turned around the post by Gould for a corner, which Janney played short to Glozier, and the resulting cross into the middle saw Fletcher power his header just over the bar. Everett tackled when Lee was about to break through from Collins’ pass, and then Collins forced a corner on the left, which he took himself and McFarlane’s header was cleared off the line.
A free kick by Parratt was charged down by Cross, and Fletcher played the ball quickly up to Janney, who set off on a long run, cut inside, and then saw his shot hit the side netting. A goal followed when Purdie found Janney and his centre was headed home by Kris Lee, but the referee gave a free kick to Maldon instead, to the surprise and very obvious disagreement of the majority of the crowd., A Janney free kick was touched back to Collins, whose cross was headed out for a corner by Sampson. Collins took the corner, and Blackwell deflected the ball out for another, which Janney curled over and Everett cleared. Collins played it straight back again and Gould failed to hold, and this gave Foyewa an opening but he was stopped by the referee’s whistle, which was fast becoming the main feature of the match, which in turn was becoming very disjointed by the very number of the stoppages, often for reasons which were not apparent from the terraces.
Maldon put a good move together when Sampson won the ball in this own half, slotted it through to Hawes who then played an immediate through pass to Antoine who homed goalwards, with McFarlane coming over to power the ball away to safety. Two successive Parratt corners were cleared, by McFarland and then Purdie, and the best move of the match came when Glozier chipped a perfect pass to Lee, who rounded Sampson and crossed, with no one being able to touch home. An almost identical move a minute later stemmed also from Glozier, this time with Foyewa providing the cross, and Everett conceded a corner, which Collins took, and this was booted upfield where Cross ran through on the right and his shot was turned out for another corner, which Collins played to Lee and thence back to Glozier, whose centre was held by Gould.
A first half in which there were a good few chances but the finishing was lacking, and perhaps the only Urchin who was reasonably happy was the one who walked off with the £80 jackpot prize. Talking point at the interval was when did Jake Whincup make his debut for Hornchurch?
Simon Parker came on for Garry Cross at half time and was immediately in the action, when Tomlinson found Collins and he sent Parker away. A quick turn and a perfect pass to Foyewa on the right and Amos probably cut in, only to hit his shot very high and very wide of the goal. For a while Urchins looked confident, a quick Collins free kick finding Foyewa again and his cross was turned out for a corner, taken by Collins and played back into the area by Tomlinson, with Gould just touching the ball out for another corner. Then Maldon broke clear and Brightly had to race out of goal to save at the feet of Antoine. Janney opened up the right side with an excellent run, but his centre was headed high over the bar. Elliot Styles came on and he was soon followed by Dave Sadler, hopefully fit again after a long spell out with injury. With Urchins taking up a new formation, with Sadler and Parker up front, they left themselves wide open at the back. A slow build up on the right side and the ball was played low into the middle, where a completely unmarked STEVE WAREHAM (yes, he is Ross Wareham’s brother) had plenty of time to pick his spot.
Urchins came back strongly though the referee must have been given an early Xmas present of a new whistle, which he seemed to want to blow non stop and this totally broke up the flow. Hawes was booked for a foul, and from the free kick ELLIOT STYLES headed home at the far post to level the score, only for Urchins to be caught out less then thirty seconds later when a long speculative shot from HUGH ASHMAN sailed almost apologetically into the net to put Maldon back in front.
Styles picked out Sadler a minute later and keeper Gould clawed his goal bound shot out for a corner, which Janney took and McFarlane headed goalwards, Gould tipping the ball over, Collins’s corner was then cleared upfield. Janney made a good run on the right and found Sadler whose shot went for a corner. Collins played the ball short to Sadler whose shot cum cross went across goal, and soon afterwards a Collins corner saw the ball bobbing around in the area before being scrambled away. Parratt at the other end had a shot saved by Brightly and a Parratt corner was headed away by McFarlane. With time running out, Janney found Parker who touched back to Janney but his long ball into the goalmouth was too far forward and Gould saved. A Collins corner was cleared almost on time, and Urchins ended pointless.
And when did Jake Whincup make his debut? It was almost two years ago exactly, when he was non playing substitute against Grays. He was also non playing substitute in the following match against St Albans. But although he has not actually played in a competitive match for Hornchurch, he has made two appearances, at Boreham Wood and at Crawley in pre-season friendlies, keeping a clean sheet on both occasions.
