Match Report by Tony Middleton
This match was covered by the BBC, and prior to the start they seemed bent on interviewing every Redbridge supporter they could find – in the event they had to interview the same one ten times. Urchins, with 200 supporters inside the ground, made one change from last week’s starting line up, Greg Tiffin coming in for Andy Tomlinson, whilst Elliot Styles came into the squad. As is normal the opposition played above themselves, on a pitch that was not at its best, Home keeper Tucker was soon in action, running out of goal to save at the edge of the area when Janney had played Lee clear, and Urchins could have taken a quick lead when Lee found Cross and Gary touched on to Parker, who turned the ball inside to Lee, whose low drive was inches wide.
Redbridge had a half chance when McFarlane conceded a free kick – the first of many curious decisions – and Luck’s hard drive went over the bar and out of the ground. Sloane then found himself clear, with the linesman not flagging for what appeared to be offside, and McFarlane did well to run back and cover, putting the ball out for a corner which Cooper floated over into the arms of Brightley. Simon Parker was chopped down and from the free kick Glozier sent the ball in deep and high and Tucker held the ball well under pressure from Lee. A Janney corner found McFarlane and Tucker again saved, but from this upfield kick Ryan Lee went away on the wing, with Urchins hesitating waiting for an offside flag which did not come, and from his cross Sloane hit the ball wide. From a long throw by Blaney Sloane outjumped Southon to head over, whilst a Purdie free kick found McFarlane, Tucker saving well.
Tiffin, working hard in midfield, played a good ball out to Lee and he touched it through to Simon Parker, who ran clear, drew the keeper, but lobbed his shot just over the bar. At the other end Brightley had to save from a Blaney long throw, but from Dale’s long clearance Kris Lee nodded on to Simon Parker, whose vicious shot hit the bar, when it seemed an almost certain goal. Cooper conceded a foul with a mistimed tackle on Tiffin, and Glozier took the free kick, Lee playing the ball on to Parker, who shot wide of the goal. Purdie out to Lee on the left and his centre went begging, whilst another Glozier free kick – Southon this time was the innocent victim of the tackle which as usual went unpenalised – found Tiffin, who picked out Lee, and Kris shot on the turn, the ball going narrowly wide.
Brightley’s long upfield kick was touched sideways by Parker to Janney who was hacked down in full flight, and from the free kick Tucker palmed the ball out to Purdie whose shot went wide, with an appeal for hand ball being ignored. A Purdie quick free kick to Cross enabled Gary to create space for himself, but his shot was off target. And then, in the fourth minute of stoppage time, Tiffin won the ball, up it went to Parker, and on to Cross, whose first time touch gave MARK JANNEY a run on goal and the shot sent 200 plus Urchins into raptures. There was still time for Redbridge to come back and a long Luck shot went over the bar and out of the ground, to give everyone a half time talking point – would Redbridge have enough balls to finish the match, as nine had already been hit into the wilderness. And one Urchins supporter wanted to know why the referee was standing in the Redbridge dug out, whilst another walked up to the BBC cameraman and asked who he was filming for.
Immediately after half time Sloane went down dramatically in the penalty area but six minutes into the second half came a goal which started at the other end of the field when Kris Lee was attempting to manoeuvre himself into a shooting position but lost the ball to Allison. A massive upfield kick found IAN LUCK, looking several yards offside, and he ran on to score, to the delight of the home supporters and to looks of disbelief from the majority of the crowd. Urchins quickly replied, and in the best possible way. The ball was played up to Lee and thence to Simon Parker, who was scythed down in full flight. No cards, why not? Up stepped MARK JANNEY to slot home the penalty.
Janney nearly carved out a third when his corner was cleared off the line, whilst a Fletcher run on the right ended when he could not get his cross in. Redbridge, aided by some unusual decisions, came back strongly, with Bradbury’s cross being turned out for a corner by Purdie, which Cooper took and McFarlane headed out, whilst another good run by Bradbury, although looking offside, ended when he was crowded out in the middle of the field in shooting range. A long range shot from Allison was fielded comfortably by Brightley, who then had to run out of goal to head away when Ryan Lee was allowed to run on, looking way offside. A corner from Cooper created danger when Brightley seemed to miss the ball, and then he clutched it as he fell backwards.
Ross Wareham came on and was quickly into action, taking a pass from Southon and then slotting through to Parker, with Tucker saving. Southon again to Wareham and Tucker saved again from Ross’ hard shot, whilst a third Southon pass found Lee in the middle, and Tucker again saved. It was getting a bit anxious at times, especially with never knowing what decision would follow the whistle, and Holloway gave Bradbury an opening, the shot going wide. Kris Lee then went clear but was stopped by Holloway and from the free kick Janney’s cross was headed away by O’Sullivan. Redbridge had one final chance, but Cooper’s corner was cleared, and almost on time Wareham found Cross who was fouled and Janney’s free kick was held by Tucker.
Not easy to pick out anyone outstanding in what was an all round solid performance, though Southon stood out, together with Purdie and McFarlane, as Urchins came under more pressure at times than they normally do. And did Redbridge have enough balls? Yes, although fourteen were booted out the ground during the match.
