Urchins took an early lead when CRAIG DENNIS moved up to head home Ayo Adetayo’s corner after only two minutes.
This is not a repeat sentence – the match was a double header, worth six points.
In a one sided first half, Urchins dominated and Rhys Madden had very little to do, with the visiting forwards rarely offering any threat. When they did move upfield they found Vincent, Dennis and Baldwin completely in command, and Hitchin did not manage a single shot at goal.
Adetayo could have made it two with a fine run in from the right, his low shot being turned around the post by Fox, with Longman’s corner again being saved by Fox. Casper drifted inside the defence to create an opening, his lob over the keeper being cleared off the line by Mullen, whilst in quick succession a hard drive was cleared off the line and another shot from Adetayo appeared to be handled in the area. Urchins pressed strongly throughout the first half and could have increased their lead when Adetayo slipped a pass through to Casper, who turned and placed the ball in front of Danny Gill, whose first time drive skimmed the bar.
The second half was a repeat performance, with Hitchin having to work hard to keep the score down, though Madden had two shots to save, one from Turner which he did well to hold, and one from Mazzochi. Danny Gill was a constant threat on the left wing, and it was his pass which let Casper through, with Fox making an excellent save, turning the ball over the bar. Adetayo missed a good chance in front of goal when he scooped the ball wide, but a minute later made up for the miss with a good pass to Roberts, the ball being played back into the goal mouth where JOHN HEFFORD ran through to touch the ball over for the second goal.
Mazzochi could have pulled a goal back with a good solo run, his shot swerving wide of the post, and then it was JOHN HEFFORD again, running through, beating Fox and then tapping the ball home. A succession of missed chances followed, as Urchins threatened to run riot. A Baldwin free kick to Adetayo saw the shot rise over the bar, Casper’s solo run ended with him glancing the ball narrowly wide, Gill twice went close, and Hefford was almost on target for a third goal, Fox saving well.
An excellent performance all round. Having lost their first seven games, scoring only two and conceding 26, Urchins have now gained six wins in a row, scoring ten and only conceding one. At the start of March they were bottom. They are now fifth in the league.
