Match Report by Tony Middleton
Urchins retained the same line up as on Saturday, with Danny Cowley coming in at substitute in place of Tim Hambley. Urchins made a slow start, though a first time shot from Danny Heale, from a touch back by Holland, had Wright in goal making the first of what was to be many saves. Luke Longman went close with a long range shot which Wright fumbled and Burbridge homed in, with Bennett getting there first to concede the first corner of the night. Longman’s corner was overhit and it ran to out to Bull on the left, who returned the ball across field to Longman, whose cross was headed wide by Holland.
A good run by Bull ended with a centre into the goalmouth which Rodwell headed out for a corner, and Tiffin swung the ball over too low and Rodwell cleared. Tiffin then interchanged passes with Nicky Cowley who was tackled by Bennett, for another corner, which Longman sent over and Heale’s powerful shot was saved by Wright, the ball rebounding to Tiffin, who hit his first time shot over the bar. Bull then cut in from the left, with Wright doing well to run out and smother the ball, and a Nicky Cowley cross from the other wing found Heale, who squared the ball back into the middle, but it has already run out of play.
Tiffin, Cowley and Tiffin again interchanged passes as they worked their way along the right, and Tiffin set up Burbridge who hammered in a shot which skimmed the bar. Bull sent King clear in the middle, and King played the ball out to Tiffin whose cross was headed over by Holland. The Stansted supporter, in fact they had three, two more than normal for visiting teams, insisted on continually shouting ‘put them under pressure’ and ‘run like an antelope’, somewhat surprising since Havering have banned any form of animal acts, but it was Tony Mercer who did just that with a solo run into an unmarked position, where he gathered the ball, ran on, and then hit in a good shot which rose over the bar.
Back to normal almost immediately with Urchins total domination of the play, and a tremendous shot from 35 yards by Longman was only parried by Wright, but then Stansted caught Urchins out with a free kick from the right hand side of the pitch. The whistle blew as the ball came over, and with perhaps Urchins thinking the referee was not ready and had pulled back the play, TONY MURPHY very gratefully nipped in to score, with no one attempting to mark him. The goal stood, though a re-take seemed the only logical decision. Urchins seemed to be put out of their stride, and three times inside a minute they played the ball back to Collier, being unable to penetrate the mass defence of the visitors. Burbridge broke the midfield deadlock when he won the ball inside his own half, powered forward past two defenders and was stopped on the edge of the area by a well timed tackle by Penfold. Stansted at last did put Urchins under a bit of pressure, when two shots in succession, one from Mercer and one from Murphy, rebounded off Bostock, with Collier eventually coming right to the edge of his area to save as Thomas moved in. A free kick 30 yards out for Urchins saw Burbridge crash in a vicious drive which beat Wright but just went over the bar, just as the floodlight went out for the sixth match in succession. The final chance of the half fell to the Stansted antelopes, Mercer being the pursued and Bostock being the hunter, his tackle giving Stansted their only corner of the first half, which Bennett played short to Penfold, who played it back to Bennett, whose centre was headed wide by Mercer.
Talking point at half time – would the Stansted supporter ever stop talking? (The answer unfortunately was No). Urchins started off confidently in the second half, putting Stansted under constant pressure. Heale to Cowley, and Parke tackled well, though at the cost of a corner. Tiffin sent the ball over, too low, and Rodwell headed away. Back to Tiffin, an excellent cross, Heale heads home, flag up, offside – it certainly did not look it. The indirect free kick only went as far as Golby, who played it out to Nicky Cowley, and his centre found Heale coming in at speed, the header going narrowly wide. Bull from Holland, inside to Longman, and a hard left foot volley beats Wright but goes over the bar again, then Nicky Cowley’s long cross field pass was just too far for Tiffin to reach. Terry Everett came on, for Bull, and immediately swung over a cross which led to a massive goalmouth scramble, with Longman’s shot deflected out for another corner. Tiffin took the corner, but Shaun Rodwell headed away. Then Cowley made ground on the right, sent the ball across, and Murphy headed clear from Heale. Everett was then guilty of a poor pass back which had Collier rushing out of goal to kick clear from Thomas, but a minute later it was back to the other end, Longman’s free kick reaching King, whose header crashed against the bar. Golby came forward, linked up with Nicky Cowley, whose centre was cleared by Stuart Rodwell. Danny Cowley came on, and straight away won the ball, played it out to Everett, who picked out Holland, whose shot was blocked for yet another corner, this time by Stuart Rodwell. Everett took the corner, and Bennett headed out for another corner, which Tiffin sent over, Wright just outjumping King for the ball. Wright again from Everett, and then a Golby free kick saw Burbridge head the ball back to DANNY HEALE, who fired home.
Bostock, Danny Cowley, and another cross into the middle, and another scramble, Mercer clearing. Bostock regained the ball, and played it back to Nicky Cowley, who won a corner. Tiffin again picked out King with the corner, and Wright saved again. With absolutely no danger at all, Stansted scored again when a massive defensive mix up saw a very jubilant SHAUN THOMAS run the ball into an empty net. Urchins increased the momentum, Tiffin firing over two corners in succession, both of which were flighted too low and easily cleared by Bennett, whilst Danny Cowley raced through the middle, but hit his shot too high. Drake came on for Burbridge, which led to a change of tactic, since Burbridge’s height could not longer make him the automatic target for a cross. A Danny Cowley free kick was headed home by Steve King, and again offside was given. King headed wide from a Nicky Cowley free kick, Shaun Rodwell headed out a Tiffin corner, whilst a Nicky Cowley free kick, following a foul on Everett, saw King hitting the ball into the side netting. Parke conceded a corner, Tiffin overhit the ball to the far wing, where Everett returned it into the middle, with Wright saving. Everett to Heale, and Tony Mercer tackled, surviving a penalty appeal in the process, and then Bostock’s long delivery into the goalmouth saw Park head out for a corner, which Tiffin again sent over too low, and with over six minutes of stoppage time played, it was all over.
