Match Report by Tony Middleton
On a clear mild night, with the temperature hovering just below zero, Urchins were caught out in the fourth minute, when they were slow to get back into position after Tiffin had conceded a free kick, and Luton star TOM WARD took full advantage, cutting inside from the left wing and scoring with a hard drive which eluded Madden and just went in at the far post. Once Hornchurch settled, they began to get into the game, with Lee Springer setting the pace with a good run through the middle, which left the Dagenham player of the year Tim Cole trailing in his wake, his excellent shot being deflected out by Lette Jallow, another player with a vast amount of experience, Drake played it back into the middle, where Springer again darted in, but his header went over the bar.
Longman sent in a good free kick which screamed past the wall, and was deflected by Hogan for a corner. Longman went across to the left to take the kick, and Kite came in late to send his header just wide of the post. At the other end it was Ward who was creating havoc, and he moved across to the right wing, gathered a pass from Charalmous, then turned inside, and sent in an excellent shot which went over the bar from a narrow angle. From the goal kick Springer played the ball out to Gill who turned it back to Drake, whose shot was well saved. Judge then did well to create space for himself, and he beat his marker to run clear, his shot going wide of the far post. Last opportunity of the half fell to Kite, who ran on to Tiffin’s cross but hit his shot wide.
One down at the interval, Urchins could have levelled inside the first minute of the restart, when Drake was fouled, and Tiffin’s quick free kick almost beat the alert Hogan, who dived to his right to save. Dagenham in turn could have gone further ahead when Ward again opened up the defence, but it was TOM WARD who made it two when he raced in from the left to drive the ball home. Ward was outstanding, and not surprisingly he is shortly to return to Luton Town, without actually ever playing for Dagenham & Redbridge in the Conference. But it was Urchins who began to exercise control in midfield, and Dagenham were forced back onto defence, Gill almost breaking through, but he was tackled by Sinnott, the ball going out for a corner, which Tiffin swung under the bar, and Hogan rose well, under pressure, to hold on to the ball under the bar. With Dagenham defending in depth, the match threatened to boil over when Francis badly mistimed tackle had the referee quickly diving in to prevent the incident escalating, with many in the crowd feeling that the resulting yellow card was far too lenient. From the free kick, Jefferies raced past Sinnott and Clark and his shot was parried by Hogan, and following a mass scramble in the goalmouth the ball was deflected for a corner, the referee once again having to intervene in the ensuing melee. Longman’s corner was pitched too low and the ball was cleared upfield, but was quickly returned and for a third time the referee had to step in sharply, when Clark fouled Drake, and Longman’s free kick was well saved by Hogan once again.
Dagenham still looked dangerous on the occasions they were able to break out from defence, and Charalmous caught the home defence out when he sped upfield, with Kite racing back to tackle at the last second, and concede a corner, which Ward swung into the middle, and Judge headed over. With Dagenham committed heavily to defend, Springer headed home from Tiffin’s free kick, the goal being refused as the flag went up for a very debateable offside. Longman had a long range shot which went wide, and a corner taken by Hefford was headed down by Dennis, the ball bouncing the wrong side of the post.
A vast improvement from the Capital League side, who perhaps let themselves down with poor finishing, compared to the visitors, who took full advantage of their own scoring chances.
