Match Report by Sara Paine
Round 1 of the FA Vase saw favourites, Urchins, up against injury-hit Cogenhoe United at Compton Park. Both teams occupy similar positions in the non-league pyramid, but Cogenhoe are sixth in the United Counties League, whilst Hornchurch are leaders of theirs. The first half started in a scrappy manner with Cogenhoe putting up a strong resistance, but failing to make any impression against new Urchins’ goalkeeping signing John Hickman. With only two minutes gone, Cogenhoe ‘keeper Peter Earl, was forced to save a fierce cross in from Billy Holland to Danny Cowley.
Four minutes later, disaster struck for Cogenhoe when their number three, Jamie Wright, was sent off for bringing down Danny Heale with his elbow. Despite being one man down, Cogenhoe continued to put up a strong resistance and were unlucky to succumb at 21 minutes to a Danny Heale goal. A header off the line by Paul Golby led to a low cross whacked into the corner of the goal, giving the ‘keeper no chance.
Cogenhoe continued to put up a fight but the Urchins pressed forward with shots at goal every few minutes, fended off by the sturdy Cogenhoe ‘keeper, Earl. Time and time again he proved his value to his team - saving a high shot from a free kick, just past the half way line, and a few minutes later a cross from the left by Holland to Heale which just skimmed past the post. Another shot by Tim Hambley just missed and Cogenhoe struggled to regain control of the match at the other end of the pitch.
The sun came out for the second half, and the Urchins took control from the off to dominate the half. After 10 minutes, a handball by Elliot Sandy resulted in a penalty for the Urchins. Danny Heale, top non-league scorer, stepped up to take the shot, but went over the top. Half way into the half, a sprint down the right side by Billy Holland was thwarted and minutes later a shot by Nicky Cowley lacked the power to get past Earl.
Given that Cogenhoe had been one man down for most of the match, they were lucky to lose by a solitary goal, when three or four from Hornchurch had looked on the cards. A flurry of Cogenhoe substitutions 30 – 40 minutes into the second half failed to stop Hornchurch’s domination and Hornchurch tifosi numbered around 120’ish - too many it seems for Cogenhoe who had to put up an additional marquee to accommodate them all.
