Match Report by Tony Middleton
Stortford fielded six players from this season’s first team squad, and predictably looked the sharper side. They took the lead on 18 minutes when LOUIE EVANS took advantage of some hesitation in defence to head home from a corner, and it was LOUIE EVANS who added to the lead five minutes later when he ran through and chipped the ball over Rhys Madden. Asa Pamplin, captain of a very young and inexperienced Urchins side, lost the ball inside his own half, which gave Vidal a clear run at goal. Makitu covered well but could not prevent Vidal getting in his shot, which Madden saved at full stretch.
Urchins took time to find any sort of rhythm, but could have pulled a goal back soon afterwards after Heffer had made ground on the right, and his hard drive was fumbled by Hussey. Asa Pamplin followed up at speed but hit the ball over the bar. It took an excellent save by Madden at the feet of Forbes to prevent a third goal, but Urchins were again unfortunate not to score when Danny Gill’s first time shot was tipped round the post by Hussey.
Urchins had done well to contain the much more experienced visitors, but were caught out after just 13.8 seconds of the second half, when NATHAN VIDAL ran through and turned the ball past Madden. Julian Edwards followed up to make sure the ball went over the line, but the goal was officially given to Vidal. Stortford accidently scored a fourth when the referee dropped the ball following an injury to a Hornchurch player, and Stortford “returned” the ball straight into the net, but the referee ordered a re-drop, which this time was played gently towards Madden. But they scored a real fourth goal soon after when substitute SCOTT TYLER finished the move off, Scott having been earlier this week released by Tottenham Hotspur.
Urchins then had their best spell of the game, with several clear cut chances. Asa Pamplin, well placed in front of goal, slipped as he turned and his shot was wide, and then Tony Maynard was played clear, but hesitated too long and was tackled by Fenn. Asa then created an opening for Maynard with a good centre, but the ball was headed over the bar, whilst Danny Gill twice got into scoring positions but was unable to get his shot in as the defenders covered quickly. Maynard again broke through but his shot went over the bar, and then followed a classic comment from the referee when the ball went out of play with both sides claiming the throw – pointing to the lineman, he called out ‘he don’t know, I don’t know either’, before (correctly) awarding at throw to Stortford. Urchins continued to press forward, though Madden was often called into action at the other end, and it was not until just twenty seconds from the end when Stortford scored their fifth, once again the scorer being SCOTT TYLER, following a massive scramble in front of goal.
