Match Report by Rob Monger
After finishing August on a high after coming out victors in a tough FA Cup replay against Chalftont St Peter in mid-week, Urchins were looking to begin September in much the same vein. It was another tough one, though, with the added incentive for both clubs as the winners would be guaranteed top spot in the league at the end of the weekend.
It was the visitors who suffered an onslaught in the opening stages and we struck the crossbar twice in the first 15 minutes. The first came after 12 minutes when a Nicky Cowley corner forced keeper Steve Ridgley to push the ball onto the woodwork, the second coming three minutes later when Billy Drake beat the Manor offside trap running onto a long ball from Glen Golby and lifting the ball over Ridgley only to be disappointed. Manor settled and had a great chance themselves when from a quick break forward 3 minutes before the interval Daniel Kemp shot over the advancing Michael Collier but also over the bar. Unfortunately their task was made all the harder when captain Jason Jay was sent off following a tussle with Danny Cowley just as the half time whistle was blowing.
We finally made the breakthrough on the hour when, after some good play, Danny Heale sent the ball into the area for Lee Perry - back from injury and who replaced Sean Dear at half time - who confidently made some time for himself 10 yards out, wrongfooting the defence, and shot home. Perry had a great chance to add to his tally in the 68th minute when, after more good work from Heale in the penalty area, he spooned the ball over when well placed. It was Danny Heale, though, who doubled our lead in the 78th minute with a quickly taken free kick which curled round the wall and nestled firmly in the far corner. Manor, who stilled looked in it after the first goal, looked beaten and could have easily found themselves further behind. A terrific cross from Danny Gill in the 82nd minute found Greg Tiffin unmarked on the far side of the area but he lifted his shot over the bar. Perry again had another chance with 5 minutes to go when after some trickery from Billy Drake his firm strike was well blocked by John Eastwood.
