Match Report by Rob Monger
It was a very uncomfortable first half for the Urchins, not just for being hit for six but having to endure torrential rain with it. It was certainly men against boys with Dagenham clearly taking an early firm grip of the game going 3 goals up within 30 minutes. Paul Benson netted twice and Matt Bodkin made it 3 before the introduction of Tony Maynard who replaced Darren Brewer on 34 minutes. Maynard came close to pulling a goal back a few minutes later after a long ball from a counter-attack gave him the opportunity to lob Simon Overland in the Dagenham goal only to see it dip just over the bar. But this was only a brief respite for our defence as Sam Saunders, Tresor Kandol and Ram Marwa gave the home side an ominous 6 goal lead at half time.
Changes were made at half time. Referee Dave Axcell changed his sodden black shirt for a rather more contemporary purple - but dry - version, but our much improved second half performance was probably more due to Malcolm Dannie replacing Ayo Adeteyo and keeper Lee Ward replacing Wiseman. Within a minute of the restart we were awarded a penalty for a foul on Sam Williams which Danny Gill confidently struck home. Ward made a great save from Benson to deny him his hat-trick in the 50th minute after which Overland made an equally great save from a fierce point blank volley from Danny Gill 5 minutes later. Lee Springer scored our second goal on 66 minutes but 2 minutes later Benson headed in from a free kick to finally complete his hat-trick and dispel the extremely faint notion of some kind of remarkable comeback.
