Match Report by Rob Monger
With the current spate of injuries it was good to see the Cowley brothers return to the team sheet, Danny starting and Nicky on the bench. Despite a couple of good home wins we still needed a good away victory to fully lay to rest the stuttering start on the first day of the season.
So far so good in the early minutes as we started strongly and a Danny Heale free kick came back off the post with Lee Sontag having two bites of the cherry from the rebound and being thwarted on both occasions by blocking defenders. It was all the more shocking then when Hullbridge took the lead after 17 minutes when Jamie Cheesewright stooped to head home from a free kick floated in from the half way line. The home side frustrated us for most of the remainder of the half despite them being under almost constant pressure and as the half wore on we were left wondering if this would be 'one of those games'. That was until the 42nd minute when Billy Holland took advantage of a fraction of a second's hesitation from the Hullbridge defence to bring the ball away from a clutch of players and fire the ball home.
In the second half Hullbridge rarely got a look in and found themselves behind six minutes in when Danny Heale sent a low drive from 20 yards past the diving Trevor Dinig in the Hullbridge goal. Danny Gill replaced the injured Sean Dear on 57 minutes and two minutes later made it 3-1, finishing off a move he started from the middle of the park. Danny Cowley had a firm effort deflected over and Stuart Roberts headed against the crossbar before Billy Holland got his second goal of the evening, running onto a loose ball after an attempted pass from a Hullbridge defender cannoned off the legs of a team-mate. Hullbridge's Neal Hughes received the first yellow card of the match with 3 minutes to go - which answered those who wondered if the referee had left his cards at home - and may, in a way, feel a bit hard done by since many other similar offences went unpunished. Dinig made a magnificent save on 43 minutes, tipping over from a Steve King header from a free-kick, but was powerless to prevent Danny Heale from making it 5-1 after some good work by Greg Tiffin.
