Match Report by Rob Monger
Saturday saw the Urchins' return to form continue in an action-packed 4-0 win at home to Burnham Ramblers. Manager Johnny Lawrence had highlighted the change to the Urchins' usual 'four at the back' formation as being a key factor in last week's 1-0 defeat by Waltham Abbey and it was the abandonment of this strategy that this week gave Hornchurch the edge.
Burnham arrived at Bridge Avenue having drawn one game and lost another in their first two matches of the season and were looking to stop the rot. However, DANNY HEALE, who had been threatening to score since his shot hit the post in the first ten minutes, opened the scoring for Hornchurch minutes later, driving the ball home from six yards after a Golby long throw was headed on by Steve King.
Burnham tried to keep it tight and a cross in from Martin Winters was headed over the bar by Dan Tencle and a Lee Perry ball across the box to Billy Holland, was lifted just over the bar.
Minutes later, central defender STEVE KING made it 2-0, spinning to volley home after Heale sent the ball back into the area as Burnham struggled to clear. The third goal for Hornchurch came with four minutes of half time from BILLY HOLLAND.
The second half opened with Hornchurch 3-0 up and Makitu getting the match off to an excellent start by hitting the crossbar in a ferocious attack on goal. Burnham 'keeper Rob Small made a couple of excellent saves as Hornchurch kept up the pressure, and a clearance on the line by Burnham's Lee Cable saved the visitors further problems. But the Urchins continued to fight hard for every ball and thwarted the Burnham revival that kept threatening to break out. Goal number four came on the hour through a magnificent long range strike from LEE PERRY which evaded the reach of Small and went in off the underside of the crossbar.
The final 30 minutes saw a flurry of substitutions - three each by Burnham and Hornchurch apiece - but it was a one-sided game and Burnham never really threatened to disturb the Urchins' composure once they got into their stride.
A fantastic result and one that will get the heads turning after recent setbacks. Urchins move up to joint second with Southend Manor in the ESL after this impressive victory.
