You can't really ask for much more than a comfortable victory over well placed opposition to kick off the New Year, especially after going down 3-1 to the same side only a few days before, but it was no more than we deserved after some recent good performances.

It was a cagey start from both sides and it was the 19th minute when the first opening came when Stortford's Steve Morison was put clear, but he was forced wide by Micky Desborough and shot just wide.  We took the lead, though, in the 25th minute when Jean-Michel Sigere ran on to a wayward pass back by Morison to slot past Rob Elliott in the Stortford goal.  We came close to going further ahead 12 minutes later when a great run from Boniek Forbes led to a shot which was half blocked by Elliott and kicked off the line in the nick of time by Gareth Gwilliam.  Stortford were handed a way back into the game on the stroke of half-time when a puzzling decision led to a penalty award which Dave Rainford took advantage of to bring the scores level.

We restored our lead four minutes into the second half, though, when Danny Shipp drove the ball home via a slight deflection from a 20 yard free-kick.  Stortford worked hard to equalise again and nearly did so in the 63rd minute when a Rainford shot wrong-footed Desborough and came back off the post, with the loose ball falling to Paul Hakim who could only blast over the bar when well placed.  The miss proved to be a pivotal moment in the game since barely a minute later we were 3-1 up.  A Mark Robson corner was cleared to the 18 yard line where Danny Hill was quick to run onto the ball and send a volleyed shot through a crowd of players and in via a post.  Stortford had much of the possession in the last quarter of the game but were unable to create any meaningful chances.  Our attacks were few and far between but we looked dangerous with Sigere having a goalbound shot blocked after a promising surge forward in a counter-attack with 10 minutes to go.
