Amazingly enough, despite our recent troubles and our gradual slip down the table, a win in this game would have put us back up to second in the table. That was easier said than done though against a team with only one league defeat at home since mid-September.
Despite some good possession from us, as well as a series of corners early on, Stortford had the better chances in the first half and should arguable been in front at half time. Micky Desborough was brought into action in the first minute when he helped over a Scott Goodwin header from a corner. Richard Howell volleyed narrowly over in the 9th minute and was foiled by Desborough 5 minutes later after he was put clear by a diagonal pass from mid-field. In the 19th minute Alex Martin put Paul Hakim clear, but once again Desborough was alert, saving well with his legs. Stortford fans must have wondered whether it was to be their day in the 22nd minute when Hakim slid in to a far post cross from Steve Morison only to put it wide. The closest we came in the first half was in the 27th minute when home keeper Rob Elliot dived to push a firm 20 yard effort from Jean-Michel Sigere wide of the post.
It's fair to say that we looked more dangerous in the second half. A great run from Sigere on the hour finished with a shot across goal which Terry Bowes could not quite get on the end of at the far post. Two minutes later Boniek Forbes made a great run down the left and passed inside to Danny Shipp whose goalbound shot was tipped round the post by Elliott. Stortford eventually took the lead in the 70th minute when Howell glanced a header from a corner into the far corner. Their second came 6 minutes later, and it was an unbelievable strike from Morison from a full 30 yards which caught Desborough well off his line. But we continued to press and we got our deserved reward with 10 minutes to go when a defence splitting pass from Forbes found Sigere who slotted past Elliott for a clinical finish. Hopes of salvaging something from this game faded with three minutes to go when a long ball upfield found substitute Duane Jackman, who shrugged off the attentions of Jamie Southon and ran through to shoot confidently past the advancing Desborough.
