We battled to come back from a 2 goal deficit in this game to earn a well deserved point, but once a gain that little bit of good fortune deserted us.
We battered the Carshalton defence in the first few minutes and could have taken an early lead. A terrific ball from defence from Mark Robson put Jean-Michel Sigere clear but after shrugging off a challenge from a defender and shooting past keeper Stuart Searle, his effort was cleared off the line by Gary Elliott. A minute later and Searle had to be alert again to make a good reaction save from a Jamie Southon effort from a corner. Carshalton's Dale Marvel dragged a shot wide in the 8th minute after a good move involving Peter Wood and Sam Saunders but three minutes later Searle was again to the rescue when he swiped an Andy Douglas cross away from the head of Terry Bowes. Marvel stooped to head wide from a Billy Harding cross on 13 minutes but the visitors took the lead 4 minutes later when a Sam Saunders shot took a wicked deflection off Scott Gooding and spun past the wrong-footed Micky Desborough. Jamie Southon headed goalwards from a Robson free kick 10 minutes later but his effort was not quite high enough to evade the reach of Searle. To make matters worse for us Carshalton went further ahead on 41 minutes when Saunders was set free on the left flank, and he crossed to the far post where Nic McDonnell, unmarked, struck home from close range. To cap a frustrating first the referee waved play on despite Sigere being clearly brought dowin in the penalty area just before the break.
The second half was much the same but thankfully we made the breakthrough. Desborough saved well from McDonnell early on but in the 62nd minute we broke strongly from defence and a deflected Sigere shot made its way to an unmarked Andy Douglas but Searle was alert and quickly smothered the chance. The hard working Douglas got his reward a minute later, though, when he flicked a header from a Robson cross past the diving Searle to reduce the arrears. Shortly after a similar header from Sigere from a Danny Hill cross went just wide but we equalised in the 72nd minute when, after some pressure around the area, Adam Locke calmly chipped the ball over Searle and just under the crossbar for a memorable goal. Further penalty appeals followed. Promising new signing Boniek Forbes wend down under a challenge in the Carshalton area with 5 minutes to go but once again the referee played on. A few minutes later McDonnell looked to have been dragged down by Desborough as they both went for a cross but after what had gone before, no-one was too surprised that nothing was given.
