GOAL - Sadler (pen) |
This was an almost perfect game of football. Almost perfect because there were not many chances (especially in the first half) and only a handful of shots on target, but the spirit, determination and endeavour on show from both sides was such that there was never a dull moment.
Both defences were tight in the first half and both keepers commanded their penalty areas with Cambridge's Duncan Roberts being kept the busier. Greg Ngoye turned and shot over from 18 yards whilst surrounded by defenders in the 22nd minute and after surviving an penalty appeal a couple of minutes later Cambridge were relieved to see a Sigere turn and shot go narrowly too high after a great ball in from Ian Cousins in the 29th minute. A timely tackle 5 minutes before half time denied Ngoye from 6 yards after Steve Clark battled well to pull the ball back from the goal line.
Chances came slightly more easier for us in the second half as we persevered but it was more the absence of a little bit of luck which denied us. Roberts saved well from Ngoye in the 56th minute after Sigere made up a lot of ground to rob a defender on the touchline and centred. Danny Hill blasted over on 65 minutes after winning the ball in midfield and skipping past a couple of defenders but our clearest chance yet came 5 minutes later when a Danny Shipp free kick went all the way to the far post where Ngoye, from 6 yards, skewed the ball just wide. Cambridge, though, scored the winner with 10 minutes to go. The ball was pumped into the area from half-way and as the ball was knocked past Micky Desborough by Dave Sadler he was clumsily challenged and was awarded a penalty which he duly converted. It was a cruel blow but it didn't dent our spirit. In the last 5 minutes we had a couple of great chances. A great move in the 43rd minute which left the Cambridge defence for once a little disorganised ended with Danny Shipp blasting the ball goalwards only for it to come back off Sigere on the ground on the 6 yard line. In the dying minutes a low Shipp cross from the byeline fooled everyone including Sigere who could not react quickly enough to make contact with the ball on the edge of the 6 yard box when the slightest of touches would surely would have found the net. Cambridge could have added to their lead in added on time when Cambridge's Dale Binns ran the length of the pitch and shot goalwards but was denied by Desborough at the near post.
A disappointing result but a heartening performance.
