Another terrific result against a side currently doing well. But just like our first meeting at Milton Road earlier this season Cambridge were to look back on their missed chances with regret - with a big FA Cup match on the coming Friday a midweek replay would have been the last thing they wanted.
But we had our chances also, and it was a promising start. A David Hicks run and shot in the 4th minute was deflected wide and in the 11th minute Danny Shipp somehow shot over the bar from 6 yards after a free-kick was headed down at the far post. Cambridge soon began to boss the game though and found the net in the 14th minute through Lee Summerscales following a neat move but was ruled offside. Shortly after Robbie Simpson got clear of the defence and lifted the ball over returnin' Urchin Micky Desborough in goal only to see it drift wide of the post. 6 minutes later, though, Simpson had better luck when in a similar position, his effort this time cannoning high in the air off the body of Desborough and coming down only a few yards out where he had the simple job of tapping into the empty net. The game became more even after that and Carl Williams just missed a far post cross from Dale Binns from a counter attack. Desborough made the save of the afternoon 3 minutes before half time tipping over magnificently from a Simpson header but in injury time we came close to equalising when Jean-Michel Sigere put Danny Shipp clear, home keeper Duncan Roberts coming out quickly to smother the Shipp's shot.
Early pressure from us in the second half led to an Adam Locke long range shot which whistled just wide but Desborough was called into action again in the 67th minute when he saved well to deny Simpson who was put clear by John Stevenson. Our equaliser came a minute later from a penalty awarded for handball. Danny Shipp duly stepped up and converted. In the closing stages Cambridge pressed hard for the goal they so desperately required and the crowd were treated to a nail biting finale. With tired legs on both sides Cambridge had three great chances to win the game in the final 5 minutes. Binns perhaps could have done better with a shot from a far post cross on 41 minutes and Simpson shot just wide from 20 yards a minute later. But when Rob Miller dragged a long range shot narrowly wide with a minute of normal time left a replay looked inevitable.
