Once again Thurrock visit the Stadium and come away with a victory - the only team to do that this season.
As usual the Thurrock side proved very difficult to break down. Adam Locke shot just wide from 18 yards in the second minute but an early set-back was Danny Shipp going off injured after only 10 minutes. Thurrock's Cliff Akurang got clear in the 29th minute but Ashley Bayes did well to swipe the ball away from the striker as he bore down on goal. A Lee Hodges free kick from 20 yards hit the crossbar on 34 minutes and a minute later a good run and pull back by Adrian Dean was met by the head of John Martin who, unfortunately, could not get over the ball and his effort went over the bar. Thurrock took the lead in the 36th minute when Akurang beat a defender on the right flank, sent in a low cross from the bye-line to the far post where Tresor Kandol completed a relatively easy task.
Early in the second half a Timothy Clancy cross was headed just wide by Kirk Jackson but our chances of getting anything from the game began to recede further in the 57th minute when Tresor Kandol volleyed home from long range after our defence failed to deal with a long goal kick. Thurrock keeper Billy McMahon made a great save from Dean on the hour but we did manage to pull a goal back in the 64th minute through Jean-Michel Sigere, who side-footed home from within the 6 yard area following a low cross in from Steve Clark. Jackson missed a great chance from 6 yards in the 75th minute and two minutes later at the other end Ashley Bayes again saved well after Johnny Buffong was put clear. With three minutes of normal time left a headed out corner fell to John Martin all alone on the 18 yard line but his shot went well over the bar. With all our possession in the final minutes the Thurrock defence held firm and they progressed to the next round.
