Match Report to follow....
After being 2-1 down at half time, an excellent second half performance saw us through to the First Round Proper of the FA Cup for the second successive season.
Gravesend made a strong start and we soaked up some pressure. Eventually we were able to make meaningful forays into the Gravesend half but were caught by the visitors well organised offside trap on many occasions. We took the lead on 31 minutes. Scoot Gooding sent a searching ball forward from defence for Lee Elam, who lost control of the ball as he wrong-footed a defender on the edge of the area but beat the advancing keeper Paul Wilkerson to shoot home from 12 yards. A minute later some good from Darren Caskey, controlling the ball just outside the area and laying off for Simon Weatherstone, saw the midfielders effort just saved by Wilkerson. Gravesend, though, responded and equalised in the 33rd minute when, after a corner was headed away, Jay Saunders rose well to head home from a whipped in cross from Justin Skinner. Wayne Purser blasted over when well placed with 5 minutes to go to the break but Gravesend went in front just before half time when Skinner converted from the spot after Damon Searle was adjudged to have brought down Steve McKimm.
Gravesend's threat subsided in the second half whilst we pressed hard to get back on level terms. A Jamie Stuart shot smacked against the post in the 56th minute with Wilkerson well beaten but on the hour Darren Caskey shot home from the spot after ex-Urchin Chris Moore handled in the area. Another great opportunity fell for Wayne Purser four minutes later as he beat the defence from a superb ball from Gooding but his attempt to flick the ball past Wilkerson was well read by the visiting custodian. Captain Paul McCarthy powered a header against the crossbar from a Damon Searle corner on 70 minutes but it was Caskey who won the game in the 77th minute with an excellent 20 yard free kick which curled round the wall and out of the reach of Wilkerson.
