Hands up all those who thought this would be easy.  Teams at the bottom upsetting teams at the top doesn't happen that often, but probably more often than it should and Welling came close to doing so in this game.

The home side had decent chance as early as the 5th minute when Lee Spiller slid in at the far post but just failed to make contact with a low cross in from George Lay.  On 11 minutes Welling's James Pullen, who was on loan to us not so long ago, pulled off a great save, clawing a Danny Shipp header off the line following a John Martin cross. How different the game would have been if that had gone in.  Danny Slatter headed narrowly over midway through the half and Sonny Ball shot inches wide in the 31st minute after a far post free kick from Jamie Day.  Pullen tipped over from a Paul McCarthy header on 32 minutes and Ashley Bayes spooned the ball wide after a good move from the home side ended with a run and shot from Ball ten minutes later.  Welling took the lead from the resulting corner, the ball crossed in low for Tommy Tyne to put the ball into the roof of the net from close range.

Another good run and shot from Day early on in the second half and a good save from Bayes in the 56th minute to deny Lay suggested that the home side were keen to extend their lead but things began to turn in our favour after manager Garry Hill changed things by replacing Danny Shipp with Kirk Jackson with 20 minutes to go.  Matt Lee cleared off the line from Wayne Purser in the 73rd minute and, after coming on for Jamie Stuart a minute earlier, Jean-Michel Sigere nodded down for Lee Elam who shot across goal and wide of the post in the 74th minute. Our equaliser finally came in the 80th minute when a near post corner was headed goalwards by Jackson again bringing out another great save from Pullen but it came back to Jackson who forced the ball home through a crowd of players.  In the closing stages efforts from John Martin and Simon Weatherstone were inches away from winning us the game, which would have been nice for us, but harsh on the home side.
