What a miserable afternoon. The Lewes pitch had survived an earlier inspection but when the rain started to come down in torrents at about 2pm with no sign of letting up the odds seemed against the game getting through the full 90 minutes. Certainly as the players slipped and slid and the ball stopped dead down the middle of the pitch in the first 5 minutes one wondered how long the referee would give it before calling a halt. But all credit to him for continuing and full credit to the players for giving us some great entertainment regardless of the conditions. In the end the rain stopped half an hour in and the pitch recovered extremely well.
We seemed to deal with the poor conditions slightly better than the home side and we made a good start. A Wayne Purser header from a Lee Elam cross was well saved by keeper Ademole Bankole but 15 minutes later he was unable to keep out a 12 yard header from Purser to put us in the lead which followed a terrific run down the left hand side from John Martin. A Scott Gooding shot was deflected off the post a minute later and mid-way through the half Bankole saved with his legs from Purser. Bankole nearly turned villain from the resulting corner when he collected then dropped the ball which was eventually hacked away. 5 minutes later there was action at the other end when a searing long range shot from Kirk Watts was tipped round the post by Ashley Bayes. With 4 minutes left in the first half we extended our lead and it followed some trickery down the right wing from Lee Elam before he crossed the ball to the far post where Danny Shipp had a simple job of nodding the ball home from 6 yards.
Bankole kept his side in the game 3 minutes into the second half tipping over magnificently from a firmly struck volley from Shipp from the edge of the area and did well again to save with his legs from Purser who slid in to make contact with a dangerous low cross from Shipp in the 65th minute. Not to be outdone Ashley Bayes tipped over from a swirling long range shot from Barry Moore straight after and Bankole saved well at the other end two minutes later, this time from a Simon Weatherstone shot. As the clock ran down we looked well on course for another victory, but Lewes pulled a goal back in the 88th minute when substitute Francis Duku headed home from a corner. That could have led to a nervous few minutes for us but we didn't panic and managed to hold on to the ball for long periods preventing the home side from mounting any further sustained attacks.
