Just over five months since our last visit we returned to Gander Green Land in attempt to reverse our 3-1 defeat over last year's Ryman Premier Division runners-up.
And we started in the best possible fashion by taking the lead after only 4 minutes. A long goal kick from Mark Westhead was chested down by Wayne Purser and knocked into the path of Kirk Jackson who, at last, opened his account for his new club from 18 yards.
4 minutes later Darren Caskey sent Steve Clark down the left wing and his low cross was met by Wayne Purser who brought out a good save from Phil Wilson in the Sutton goal. Stuart shot wide himself from a Damon Searle corner a minute later and at that point Sutton weren't in the game at all. They soon got their game together and came close on 11 minutes when a corner, flicked on at the near post was headed narrowly wide by Lewis Gonsalves at the far post. Two minutes later though the home side were level. And it was ex-Urchin Andrew Martin who latched onto a threaded ball from Eddie Akuamoah to slot past Mark Westhead.
Purser hit the post on the half hour soon after which Searle shot just wide following a strong forward move. With 10 minutes to go Mark Westhead was called upon to save superbly from Peter Fear with Loui Fazakerley blasting over from the follow-up. Four minutes later Jackson was clear in the area but was denied by a superb tackle from Gonsalves as he was bearing down on goal.
More good football early in the second half saw an early chance from Jackson from six yards from a Searle cross but his shot had little power and was no problem for Wilson. Lee Elam came on 11 minutes into the half, replacing Steve Clark, and he made an impact after only a minute. After another good move Kirk Jackson's shot was blocked from a Purser pull-back. Elam followed up and his shot from 18 yards was saved, but he ran onto to the loose ball again and finished with style.
An Elam long range effort in the 72nd minute curled just wide and Purser narrowly failed to get on the scoresheet again two minutes later when his delicate touch goalwards was tipped round the post by Wilson after Jackson had headed a long goal kick into the danger area. The unlucky Purser headed just over from an Elam corner with 5 minutes to go, but during injury time Sutton came close to equalising again. A drop ball on the edge of the area squirmed loose into the area where Craig Watkins got a touch to send it high over the advancing Westhead. Unluckily for the home side the ball came down against the crossbar and was cleared.
