A stunning second half performance gave us our first goals, and our first win, of the season. But after the first half with defences on top the final outcome did not seem likely.
Despite being goalless the first half was lively and in the opening minutes Dave Town shot over after a pull back from the bye-line from Jason Chewins. Havant's Gavin Holligan, a prolific striker for the Hawks in their short spell for them since leaving us last season, was stretchered off in the 18th minute with a hamstring injury which is likely to put him out of contention for several weeks, and they certainly missed his pace up front. Wayne Purser headed over from a Damon Searle cross on 23 minutes and 8 minutes before half time Paul McCarthy headed over from a Darren Caskey corner.
Kirk Jackson had to go off for treatment on 44 minutes after a clash of heads in the Havant area, but was back on as the half went into added on time and came the closest of either side to scoring. Put through by Caskey he was faced with the advancing Gareth Howells in the Havant goal, who deflected his shot wide.
The second half could not have started better for us as in the first minute Paul McCarthy headed home from a Damon Searle cross to put us in front. The relief from finally scoring was tangible and Havant were to be on the receiving end of a team with a point to prove. 5 minutes later a goal kick was headed back towards goal by Steve Clark and Kirk Jackson nodded down in the path of Wayne Purser who curled the ball round Howells to extend our lead. A Caskey diving header after a Purser cross in the 55th minute went narrowly wide and three minutes later a goalmouth scramble following a Clark run and cross from the left was unconvincingly cleared. Purser made it 3-0 on 62 minutes when he ran from just inside the Havant half to the edge of the area, where his shot spun off Alec Masson and out of the reach of Howells. Havant came closest to scoring in the 72nd minute when Tom Jordan headed a Geoff Pitcher free kick goalwards but Mark Westhead made a fine reaction save to push the ball high over the bar.
We completed the scoring in the 75th minute when Caskey robbed a defender just inside the Havant half and chipped past Howells from fully 30 yards. Jordan poked the ball over the bar from 6 yards with 5 minutes left when it seemed easier to score but we could have extended our lead further in injury time when Purser surged into the area after a superb ball from Caskey and cracked a shot onto the underside of the crossbar.
